The Limits of Spiritual Communication

Consciousness and Otherness: The Problem of Transcendent Communication

Panos Sakelis

Modern Metaphysician

Humanity has an obsession with the idea that it is not alone. It wants to speak with angels, to receive signals from the dead, to read signs in coincidence, in every unexplained noise in the night, in every dream that leaves a trace, in every chance encounter that seemed a little too unlikely to be chance. This obsession is not pathological, it is an indicator. Something inside knows, or feels that it knows, that there are other levels, other presences, other modes of existence that cannot be seen but press inward. The problem is not the search, it is the superficiality with which we believe we have already found it.

Let us be clear about something from the start. The Divine Spark that dwells within humanity has a Hyperessential origin, meaning it proceeds from Creation at the level that precedes even God as a creative entity. In theory, this should give it access everywhere. But the Spark does not travel alone. It travels inside a human being. And a human being has a brain.

This is precisely where the argument of “natural access” breaks down. The instruments of communication, sensation, perception, cognition, are material constructs, shaped by millions of years of biological evolution to handle a very specific range of reality. Whatever does not fit within that range does not exist for you. Not in reality, in your equipment. An entity that inhabits a different level of consciousness is not “hidden,” it is out of frequency. And no amount of desire tunes the receiver on its own.

Tarkovsky saw this in a way that no philosopher stated quite so clearly. In Solaris, the ocean does not communicate with the astronauts, it sends them representations drawn from their own memory, because that is all they are capable of understanding. It is not malice, it is the only language they share. Every act of communication between dissimilar forms of consciousness works this way: the stronger descends to the level of the weaker, and something is always lost in translation. Always, without exception.

What then of the dead? Here things become interesting, and a little darker. A human being who has just died is in a transitional state, dwelling temporarily at the threshold between levels of consciousness. It has not yet fully disconnected from the human field. You can feel this if you have been present at a death, there is something in the air that lingers, for a while, before it departs. In this transitory condition, contact is theoretically possible. But it requires from our side an equivalent slippage: a state of consciousness that is neither waking nor sleep, something in between, in the cold hour before dawn, where the brain’s filter relaxes enough to let something else through, if there is something there to come through.

Angels, now, are a different matter, and dangerously misunderstood. If you define them as inhabitants of the astral level, know that the astral is full of residue: impressions, echoes, shells of old personalities still circulating because they do not know where else to go. Whatever “communicates” from there is rarely what you think it is. The angel as an authentic entity belongs to an entirely different level, and the tradition of the Old Testament hints at this without explaining it: when God wished to convey many things, it sent two or three angels, because each one could carry only a single piece of information. It is therefore not the Hermes of ancient Greece, the all-knowing messenger who flies between worlds with a smile and irony. It is a specialized carrier of one and only one vibration. An arrow, not a hand.

Even if we accept that we can “send” a request to angelic entities, through deep prayer, meditation, spiritual elevation, this does not constitute communication. It is a one-way transmission. Consider the analogy: a four-watt bulb connected directly to a 220-volt source does not illuminate. It explodes. A transformer is needed. In the language of spiritual tradition, this means that one must first raise one’s vibration enough to approach their level of transmission. And this is not achieved through piety, good intentions, or candles. It requires work, transformation, the gradual and painful refinement we call perfection, which most people avoid precisely because it is not pleasant.

And here enters the law that no one wants to hear: justice. Why you and not your adversary? Why should “your angel” help you win the lawsuit, find work, survive, when the other person has their own angel and their own needs? Nothing in the structure of Creation supports this naivety. There is no celestial bureaucracy processing applications in order of priority. Higher assistance is not distributed on the basis of who asked first, or loudest, or with the most sincere tears. It is distributed, if it is distributed at all, according to criteria that entirely transcend our own logic, our own need, our own idea of what is just.

What we chiefly need is not better channels of communication with the invisible. It is, finally, better interpretation of what we are already receiving. We see, hear, dream, and then we layer over all of it our own expectations, our fears, our theological preferences, our need not to be alone, and we call the result a “message.” The mirror of consciousness returns whatever you give it. Always, with precision. And this is what is frightening: it does not lie, it simply does nothing other than reflect you back to yourself.

"To say that you communicated with an angel when in essence you spoke with yourself, that is not spirituality. It is the most elegant way to remain locked inside. And the hardest one to let go of, because it feels so deep, so real, so entirely your own."
