Memory as the Structure of the Universe

From Neuronal Synapses to the Cosmic Field of Information

Your brain, a mere three-pound mass of biological matter, wet, warm, electrically charged, holds far more than you imagine. Within it reside lost faces, faded landscapes, conquered fears, and loves that altered the course of a life. There echoes your mother’s voice, the laughter of a friend who passed years ago, the scent of a summer that will never return.
Neuroscience has decoded much about the mechanics of memory, yet it knows little about its mystery.

In 1949, Donald Hebb posited a principle that changed everything: neurons that fire together, wire together. Every experience etches a physical trace. Synapses strengthen, neural pathways stabilize, the brain’s architecture transforms.
Memory is not a storage unit, it is a transformation. You don’t just store memories, you become the result of those memories. The neural network you are today is not the same as the one you were ten years ago. Every significant experience reshapes your structure. In this sense, the self is not an object, it is a process. It is not a noun, but a verb.

Up to this point, the explanation seems sufficient. The problem arises when we dare to ask something deeper. How does an electrochemical change translate into an experience? How does the strengthening of a synapse become the memory of an afternoon by the sea? Why should matter be accompanied by experience?
Between the description of the brain and the experience of remembering, a chasm opens. Science has named it the “Hard Problem of Consciousness.” The name, however, is not a solution, it is merely an accurate admission of ignorance.


We can perfectly describe a piano. From that description, however, music does not emerge. In the same way, mapping neurons does not explain why the internal sensation of experience exists.

And here begins the truly interesting area of research. The philosopher and systems theorist Ervin Laszlo proposed the existence of an Akashic Field, a fundamental substrate of information in which every event leaves its imprint. Not like digital information, but like a structural background of reality, shaped by the quantum energy fields of empty space, like information inscribed not in neurons but in spacetime itself. The idea is not a proven scientific theory, but it is a serious philosophical hypothesis.


According to this hypothesis, the universe is not just a collection of interacting objects, it is a field that preserves information. Every event, every relationship, every form of organization leaves a trace in its structure.

This idea sounds bold. However, modern physics has already dismantled the old image of empty space. The vacuum is not empty, it is a sea of energy fluctuations, quantum fields, and dynamic interactions.
The question then is not whether reality contains information. The question is whether this information is preserved as a structural characteristic of the universe itself.
Here a remarkable analogy appears. The brain imprints experiences by altering the structure of its synapses. Perhaps the universe operates in an analogous way on a cosmic scale. The neuron changes from experience. Perhaps reality also changes from the events that occur within it.

The same principle expressed on two different levels: experience modifies the substrate that hosts it. Within the framework of this view, memory ceases to be exclusively a biological phenomenon. It becomes a fundamental property of existence itself. This approach connects with an even deeper idea. Perhaps consciousness is not produced by matter, but manifests through it. Just as light passes through a prism without being created by the prism, so too consciousness can be expressed through the brain without being limited to it.
If this perspective is correct, then the brain is not the creator of experience but its local transformer, a biological organ that allows consciousness to take a specific form within space and time.

The consequences are remarkable. Every thought you repeat, every habit you cultivate, every choice that becomes character, is not a fleeting event. It is a modification of your structure. And if reality indeed functions as a field of information, then every such modification simultaneously constitutes a small contribution to the overall history of the universe.


Life then acquires a different meaning. It is not a series of events that appear and disappear. It is a process of inscription, a continuous addition of information to the great archive of existence. Not necessarily because there is some cosmic accountant keeping ledgers, but because reality itself seems to be transformed by what happens within it.

Perhaps, ultimately, memory is much more than a function of the brain. Perhaps it is the signature that experience leaves upon existence itself. And if the universe indeed does not forget, then the essential question is not whether you will leave a trace, the trace is inevitable.
