I begin with a statement that will irritate moralists: Ethics has nothing to do with good and evil. It has to do with whether you will survive in the sense that truly matters, not biologically, but ontologically.
A bacterium is destroyed by a white blood cell. A galaxy swallows another. No one asks whether it was fair. Nature has no opinion. It operates coldly and without any moral charge, as a system of staggering composure that is entirely indifferent to your feelings.

Ethics, then, was not born in nature. It was born the moment nature created something complex enough to question itself. That is man, or at least that is his role. The biological species Homo Sapiens guarantees nothing. Millions of individuals live and die as well-functioning animals, with decent thoughts and sufficient feelings. Man, in the sense that concerns us here, is something different: a being that carries within itself a Divine Spark, something not produced by matter but installed in it the moment development was mature enough to receive it. Form does not guarantee function. The difference is functional, not morphological.

This Spark is the source of ethical anxiety. Not social law, not religion. Social law simply records what has already cost dearly in experience. Religion often confuses the map with the territory. But the Spark, it remembers. It sleeps deep within the system yet drives man to search, to question, to never be fully satisfied with his material achievements, even when he has every reason to be content.
Like an actor who never forgets who he is even while playing a role, the Spark never becomes the character it inhabits. What it collects from this life is not biographical data, it is something deeper: the knowledge of what it means to be separate, autonomous, to make decisions alone in a world that does not ask you. This knowledge of separateness is the only thing worth carrying back.

At an archetypal level, Ethics is the conscious alignment with the laws that govern creation. Love and Wisdom are the two fundamental principles. They are not emotions, they are cosmic forces that, when they descend to the human level, become justice and kindness. Creation is inevitably less perfect than its Source, that is a structural problem, not a moral accident. “Evil” is nothing but the “lesser good” that nests in relativity. Ethical effort is the effort to bridge the gap, from the relative man toward the Absolute archetype.
Man does not express Ethics through obedience. That is an ethical costume, not an ethical life. He expresses it through transmutation, that inner alchemy where a raw impulse becomes awareness, where reaction becomes choice. This requires something rare in the modern age: silence. Not the silence of boredom, but that inner silence which allows you to hear the guide who always knew, but simply could not speak above the noise.

Many people, submerged in their material achievements or paralyzed by their fears, refuse to enter consciously into this process of completion. They repeat the first cycle endlessly. Tradition calls them the “living dead,” biologically active, spiritually immobilized.
The just and the ethical are not the same thing. Justice is the Law of Balance, it operates with mathematical precision, the relentless mill that grinds whatever you sow. It is cold, blind, impersonal. Ethics, by contrast, contains something that justice cannot produce on its own: free will and mercy. The man who has understood what he is doing uses justice as a tool, but is guided by Love. Justice without love is execution. Love without justice is naivety. Their combination is Ethics.

Ethics is not the code of good conduct given to you through catechism or upbringing. It is the inner pressure of a Spark that remembers where it came from and, if you do not drown its voice in the noise of daily life, also knows where it leads.
